Identifying optimal intervention strategies for patients with spinal cord injury can be very challenging for clinicians. Spinal cord injuries present with different limitations and specific patient needs, requiring a strong understanding of the functional outcomes for each level of injury. The best way to begin treating any patient with a spinal cord injury is with a clear understanding of common complications seen in this population. In this course, J.J. Mowder-Tinney emphasizes the priority complications that impact safety and function, and demonstrates providing explicit treatment adjustments for optimal outcomes. In addition, this course reviews appropriate goals and optimal treatment options for someone with a high cervical-level injury. This course involves multiple demonstrations with real patients who have cervical-level injuries. This course is appropriate for PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, and nurses and can be utilized in any patient setting.

This chapter will review SCI demographics and the most common levels of injury. The different functional implications and goals of each injury will be discussed to assist in developing an appropriate plan of care.

Emphasis will be placed on patients being educated on each of the priority steps to promote independence and safety.
