Identifying strategies for working with people with a C6-level injury can be very challenging for clinicians. This level injury has great rehabilitation potential but requires very specific teaching in regard to how the person must move and the types of techniques incorporated. In this course, J.J. Mowder-Tinney will provide specific skills to clinicians to increase the success of their movements during bed mobility and transfers. In addition, this course will illustrate interventions in a variety of different positions that can be performed in any setting. This course involves multiple demonstrations with real patients who have cervical-level injuries to illustrate interventions that will optimize their independence. This course is appropriate for PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, and nurses and can be utilized in any patient setting.

This chapter will compare and contrast key strategies required when treating people with a C6 level of injury to improve their functional independence. The focus will be on bed mobility activities, including all directions for rolling, supine to long sit, and short sit to long sit.

2. Strategies to Optimize Independence in Transfers in a Person With a C6-Level Injury

This chapter will discuss how to design a variety of activities for strengthening a person with a C6-level injury. This will include optimal techniques to improve the ability to transition within movements and be performed in any position: supine, sitting in wheelchair, short sitting, long sitting, and sidelying.

3. Strengthening and Transitioning Activities for A Person With A C6-Level Injury
