Ensuring Long-Term Cognitive Treatment Outcomes for Adults and Children (Recorded Webinar)
This webinar will focus on evidence-based interventions for cognitive skills, addressing methodology for direct practice and strategies for long-term retention. We will begin with a review of neuroscience research on human brain organization of cognitive functions and then discuss evidence-based research on how those capacities develop in children and are rehabilitated in adults. The webinar will focus on best practices for habilitation and rehabilitation of cognitive regulatory executive functions. This content is designed for clinical application by speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists who work with children or adults for whom cognitive issues interfere with long-term treatment outcomes. This course is specifically designed to expand the therapeutic knowledge base to include evidence-based approaches that enhance regulatory auditory, visual, and motor executive skills, including working memory, organization, problem-solving, and cognitive flexibility.
Cognitive Interventions: Neuroscience Applications in Clinical Practice (Recorded Webinar)
Presented by Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow
Cognitive Interventions: Neuroscience Applications in Clinical Practice (Recorded Webinar)
This course is a recording of a previously hosted live webinar event. Polling and question submission features are not available for this recording. Format and structure may differ from those of standard MedBridge courses.
This course will review neuroscience research on cognitive functions associated with acquired neuropathologies in adults as well as neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adolescents. The course will focus on clinically relevant cognitive issues for academic, vocational, and/or avocational goals. Evidence-based interventions will be discussed for pediatric and adult populations.
Interdisciplinary Management: Right-Hemisphere Stroke (Part 1)
Presented by Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow
Interdisciplinary Management: Right-Hemisphere Stroke (Part 1)
The course is a review and update on new neuroscience and applicable cognitive-communication research for addressing impairments associated with right-hemisphere stroke. The course will emphasize research on those impairments and interventions that cross therapeutic disciplines. The areas reviewed include executive functions, such as strategic attention, working memory, error monitoring, and self-regulation. The content also focuses on the impact of hemispatial neglect on activities of daily living as well as literacy and social communication skills.
Interdisciplinary Management: Right-Hemisphere Stroke (Part 2)
Presented by Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow
Interdisciplinary Management: Right-Hemisphere Stroke (Part 2)
This course will update clinicians on application of new neuroscience for interdisciplinary management of cognitive and communication issues associated with right-hemisphere stroke that apply across disciplines, including nursing, and impact ADL outcomes. Those issues that affect OT, PT, and speech and benefit from interdisciplinary coordination include hemispatial neglect, problems with gestalt visual processing, and difficulties with organization and executive functions.
The Adolescent Brain: Applications for Clinical Management (Part 1)
Presented by Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow
The Adolescent Brain: Applications for Clinical Management (Part 1)
This two-part course will review new research and provide practical information on new approaches for working with adolescents. The focus of Part 1 will be an overview of the research on the adolescent brain mismatch--developing social skills versus executive functions. It will also include information on the dynamic coaching model to enhance adolescent motivation for intervention. The content is helpful for reading, language, and learning disability specialists working with adolescents in academic or private practice settings.
The Adolescent Brain: Applications for Clinical Management (Part 2)
Presented by Martha S. Burns, PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow
The Adolescent Brain: Applications for Clinical Management (Part 2)
This two-part course will apply new research on brain organization and maturation in adolescents to intervention approaches. The focus of Part 2 will be application for treatment of language, communication, and cognitive limitations associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in adolescents. The content is helpful for reading, language, and learning disability specialists working with adolescents in academic or private practice settings.
