Terry Malone
PT, EdD, AT-Ret
Dr. Terry Malone received his EdD and MSPT from Duke University in North Carolina and his BA from Bluffton College in Ohio. At Duke, he served as the initial sports physical therapist and was the coordinator of the Sports Medicine Clinic.
He served as the initial chairperson of the Sports Specialization Council of the APTA and has been liaison to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports. Dr. Malone was the initial chair and dean of the Krannert School of Physical Therapy at the University of Indianapolis and served as the physical therapy program director at the University of Kentucky from 1993 to 2006. Terry is now a full-time professor at the University of Kentucky, and he enjoys most sports, with a particular love for golf.

What Every Clinician Should Know About ACL Injury and Treatment
This course is a look at the last 50 years of ACL injury management. The course describes the challenges of identifying an optimal approach to management, which has evolved based on both clinical and basic science. This evolution involved numerous attempts at replicating the function of a native ACL and how to best rehabilitate the individual postoperatively. In the US today, individuals with noncontact ACL injuries are typically treated with a reconstruction with a strong graft that is properly positioned and fixated to enable early ROM and an active rehabilitative approach. Interestingly, the attempted early return to sport has become muted as registries have recognized that return before nine months is not ideal. This course provides the context of how we got to where we are and where we might be going.
Treatment of Meniscal Injuries
Presented by Terry Malone, PT, EdD, AT-Ret
Treatment of Meniscal Injuries
Treatment of individuals with meniscus pathology has evolved dramatically in the past 50 years. Much of the evolution has been driven by the arthroscope and advanced imaging that better elucidate lesions. We now address these pathologies through the lens of acute versus degenerative and discuss how to best address the presenting issue. This course will provide a context for the functional requirements that drive management of decision-making for both conservative and operative management (excision/partial/repair). The rehabilitative approaches are individualized to the specific operative or nonoperative sequence.
The Other Ligaments: Multiple Ligament Injury and Treatment
Presented by Terry Malone, PT, EdD, AT-Ret
The Other Ligaments: Multiple Ligament Injury and Treatment
There are ligaments of the knee other than the ACL, and attention to these is required. As these other ligaments have specific functions, treatment is dictated by the structure/function relationship. This also plays a role in management decisions and if operative intervention is required. The tibial collateral, fibular collateral, posterior cruciate, medial patellofemoral, and anterolateral ligaments, in conjunction with the capsule, will be discussed for both injury mechanisms and treatment. Return to play after treatment will be the emphasis in rehabilitation decisions.
Treatment of Patellofemoral Joint Disorders
Presented by Terry Malone, PT, EdD, AT-Ret
Treatment of Patellofemoral Joint Disorders
Anterior knee pain or patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most discussed conditions involving the knee. This condition is extremely common and remains a challenging presentation for both patient and clinician. This course is designed to provide the rehabilitation literature that has enhanced our understanding and treatment of these patients and outline protocols for management of PFPS based on underlying anatomy. Four suggested protocols are given that match selected patients with matched interventions.
Knee Realities: Managing Collateral Ligament Injuries Part 2

Knee Realities: Managing Collateral Ligament Injuries Part 2
What is the best practice when managing collateral ligament injuries in the knee? To approach this question, Dr. Terry Malone first covers a detailed understanding of the anatomy of the knee and different mechanisms of injury that may cause collateral ligament injuries. Dr. Malone establishes the distinct differences between the collateral ligaments and the cruciate ligaments, which work together to enable a four bar linkage that enables passive control throughout the knee's range of motion. Through a thorough review of examination techniques and literature, Dr. Malone provides an engaging and informative course on how to manage collateral ligament injuries, from the time of detection through rehabilitation. Join Dr. Malone as he utilizes patient demonstrations, dynamic animations, and several detailed case studies to help participants gain a solid understanding of collateral ligament injury management.
Knee Realities: Managing Multiple Ligament Injuries
Presented by Terry Malone, PT, EdD, AT-Ret
Knee Realities: Managing Multiple Ligament Injuries
Managing multiple ligament injuries in the knee can be a challenging process and certainly requires one to have a solid foundation of rotary instability and specific rotational instabilities (AMRI, ALRI, PLRI). These patients may prove to be a challenge for the sports physical therapist, as many of the classical rules for treatment no longer apply. Surgical timing, early rehabilitation, and long-term outcomes will differ in comparison to methods utilized to treat singular ligament injuries. In this course, Dr. Terry Malone will guide participants through the framework of management that allows the rehabilitation specialist to match the demands and capabilities of repaired or healing tissue. This course will utilize motion graphics, case studies, and live demonstrations to cover the realities of multiple ligament injury management, and care from surgery to rehabilitation.

The Knee: Injuries Unique to Knee Structure and Function
Presented by Terry Malone, PT, EdD, AT-Ret
The Knee: Injuries Unique to Knee Structure and Function
There are four primary ligamentous restraints of the knee (MCL, LCL, ACL, PCL) working with the menisci to provide soft tissue constraint. This module is designed to present the other conditions associated with this unique functional unit. The sequence will be related to function, and will move from soft tissues to articular cartilage.
