Management & Treatment of Swallowing & Feeding Disorders in Schools
Presented by Emily M. Homer, MA, CCC-SLP
Management & Treatment of Swallowing & Feeding Disorders in Schools
This course will provide information on managing and treating swallowing and feeding disorders in the school setting once a safe feeding plan has been established. Management and treatment includes setting goals to establish, maintain or to advance a student's ability to eat in a more normalized manner. There are four levels of management that will be discussed: collaborative consultation, direct therapeutic intervention, intervention with the student with progressive disorders or who is medically fragile, and transition to or from tube feeding. School-based therapists will be able to use this structure to design therapeutic intervention specific to a student's status, functioning level and disorder.
Management of Post-Stroke Dysphagia
Presented by Stephanie Daniels, PhD, CCC-SLP, F-ASHA
Management of Post-Stroke Dysphagia
The purpose of this course, with Stephanie Daniels, is to detail compensatory and rehabilitative treatment strategies for post-stroke dysphagia. Particular focus will be placed on implementing the correct rehabilitative strategy based on the underlying impairment. The concept of skill-based versus strength-based training will be discussed, and key compensatory and management strategies will be shown with a live patient.
Evidence-Based Interventions for Individuals with Dementia
Presented by Jane Yakel, MS, CCC-SLP
Evidence-Based Interventions for Individuals with Dementia
Dementia is now being referred to as an "epidemic," and it is becoming increasingly more challenging to provide appropriate services that benefit the individual and maximize cognitive and functional outcomes. We are continually being swept into a flurry of daunting tasks to teach the demented patient skills that are hard to come by, including locking wheelchair brakes for safety, drinking liquids to prevent dehydration, and increase functional independence in toileting. This course teaches the top evidence-based intervention strategies used by all disciplines in the field of dementia. Step-by-step directions with live demonstrations will leave the participant with the confidence and skills to meet functional outcomes for all patents, at all levels.
Aphasia Models
Presented by Diane Kendall, PhD, CCC-SLP
Aphasia Models
In this course, Aphasia Models, Dr. Diane Kendall provides a basic background and definition of aphasia, reviews the model upon which the classical aphasia syndromes originates, discusses how the classical syndromes might be lacking in terms of sensitivity and specificity of linguistic impairment, reviews a connectionist model of language, and discusses how patient errors can aid in the development of a sensitive and specific treatment plan.
